Latin Artists Win Big At The American Music Awards

This year’s American Music Awards (AMAs) took place Sunday night, November 21st. Although Justin Bieber took home the most coveted prize of the night (Artist of the Year), artists of Latin descent received sizeable awards. The Black Eyed Peas (members Fergie and Taboo are both part Mexican) won the category of Favorite Pop Group, with big-name opponents such as Lady Antebellum and Train.  Shakira, famed Colombian singer, took the prize for Favorite Latin Artist. To claim this coveted position, Shakira beat out the Spanish artist Enrique Iglesias and Puerto Rican reggaeton star Daddy Yankee. This is Shakira’s 4th American Music Award of her 20-year career. Her many other achievements include five Billboard Music Awards, two Grammies, and 12 Premios MTV Latinoamerica. Performances by Latin artists included Christina Aguilera, Carlos Santana, the Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, and Pitbull.
